Bullying and Harassment

About one-third to one-forth of students report having been bullied at some point, with most of it occurring in middle school. Bullying affects all youth, including those who are bullied, those who bully, and those who see the bullying.  It is linked to many negative outcomes including impacts on mental health, substance use, and suicide.  Some effects may last into adulthood.

Young people, who are victims of bullying and/or bully others and/or witnessed others being bullied, are at high risk of suffering from:

·         Suicidal attempts

·         Self-injuries

·         Depression

·         Irritability or anger

·         Difficulties in falling and/or staying asleep

·         Nightmares

·         Headaches

·         Stomachaches

·         Multiple joint and muscle pains

·         Weight gain or loss

·         Impulsivity

·         Inability to concentrate

They are also more likely to use alcohol and drugs; be frequently absent from school; be involved in physical fights; carry a weapon to school and run away from home.
